Introduction to Handgun & Pistol Handling

Course Description

Learn the basics including: safety precautions, types of handguns, considerations for purchasing a handgun, legal considerations of owning handguns, handling and storing a handgun, fundamentals of shooting and shooting positions. Classroom instruction will be followed by range time with a low 2:1 student to instructor ratio. Requirements: The student must have a reliable, unloaded handgun of a caliber of .22 or above (but not larger than a .45 caliber). Firearm can be personal or borrowed from Schoolcraft College. All weapons will be inspected by staff prior to firing. Bring 100 rounds of factory ammunition in a factory box to the class. Students borrowing a firearm from Schoolcraft College shall bring 100 rounds of 9mm factory ammunition, in a factory box. If using a pistol you will need one extra magazine. Students must bring personal ear protection and shatter resistant eye protection. Targets are included in the cost of the class. All students must sign a waiver. Appropriate attire is required: long sleeve shirt, full-length pants, baseball-style cap, and closed-toe shoes. Students must be able to physically operate a firearm to attend range portion of class. If requirement cannot be safely met, students may be asked to sit out range portion of class. All instructors are state certified law enforcement firearms instructors.
