Schoolcraft College’s new Pharmacy Technician Certificate program begins Fall 2018; Nine month program prepares students for career as licensed pharmacy technician

A new Pharmacy Technician Certificate program will start in the Fall 2018 semester at Schoolcraft College and has been designed to prepare students for a career as a licensed pharmacy technician in a variety of pharmacy settings, including drug stores, hospitals and long-term care facilities. 

All courses in the nine-month program will be taught by licensed pharmacists and provide students with the knowledge needed to assist pharmacists in the preparation and distribution of medicines.  Becoming a licensed pharmacy technician is an excellent way to start a career in health care.

“Employment of pharmacy technicians is projected to grow 9 percent from 2014 to 2024 according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, and students in our program will have an advantage when looking at career opportunities in this in-demand area of health care,” said Joseph Ringer, licensed pharmacist and Coordinator for the Pharmacy Technician Certificate program.

Students must start the nine-month program in the fall 2018 semester and will finish after the spring 2019 semester.  All classes are taught at Schoolcraft College’s Radcliff Center in Garden City, where the college’s pharmacy simulation lab will also be located.  

“In addition to the experiential rotations with potential employers that may lead to a job opportunity, students will be guided by certified pharmacy technicians to ensure they learn the skills needed to become a qualified pharmacy technician,” Ringer said. 

Students who complete the program requirements will also need to pass a national certification exam and obtain a license as a Pharmacy Technician through the State of Michigan; processes to meet these requirements are part of the college’s certificate program.
