Veterans Resource Center Holds Fundraiser Nov. 8 at Henry’s to Benefit Freedom Center and Clothing Drive for Homeless Vets through Dec. 1

Schoolcraft College’s Veterans Resource Center is hosting an Annual Fundraiser and Coat Drive on Nov. 8 to benefit local veterans.  As part of its Veteran’s Day celebration, the Resource Center will be accepting donations at a table at Henry’s Nov. 8 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for the Freedom Center at Detroit Metro Airport.  The Freedom Center provides complimentary military hospitality lounges that serve traveling active military members and their dependents and retired veterans.

In addition to the fundraiser, the Veterans Resource Center is also working with the Schoolcraft Scholars Honors Program to collect clothing items for homeless veterans in Metro Detroit through Dec. 1 at three drop-off areas around campus.  Donations of new or slightly used coats, gloves, hats, socks or t-shirts can be dropped-off in the Student Activities Office in the lower level of the VisTaTech Center; the Veterans Resource Center office in the McDowell Center, Room 240; or in the Honors Scholars Office in the Liberal Arts building, Room 524.

Schoolcraft College’s Veterans Resource Center provides assistance to veterans and military members as prospective or current students, including assistance with the VA educational benefits application process; academic advising and course selection; planning a program of study in accordance with Schoolcraft and VA policies and guidelines; submission of enrollment certification paperwork; and information about scholarships offered to veterans and service members.

The college also has a unique career services program, Career Coach, to assist veterans in finding the right career. The Career Coach assessment tool identifies a student’s interests and matches those to potential career areas. Using that information and a simple keyword search, students can learn about the employment prospects for a variety of careers, wage information and current job postings in the area. It also helps map an educational pathway, including degrees and certificates offered at Schoolcraft College, to ensure students achieve their career goals.
