According to the Association of American Colleges and Universities, “Two recent studies report[ed] pervasive levels of food insecurity and housing insecurity (the struggle to pay rent, mortgages, or utilities) among students at two- and four-year institutions.” (2017) In fact, students at Schoolcraft College sometimes experience personal difficulties that are overwhelming, and are often faced with making the difficult decision of whether to continue their schooling. Be it a transportation or housing issue, childcare need or healthcare concern, Schoolcraft wants students to know that they matter and that we are here to help!
To assist in addressing these issues, the Schoolcraft College Foundation established the Student Emergency Needs Fund, and raised $100,000 from individual donors to make the inaugural grant. The Foundation continues to raise the necessary funds which enable the Hinkle Center to provide qualified students with a one-time grant of up to $500 to assist with an unexpected financial emergency.
Since the fund was established in January 2018, it has funded over 60 students and awarded nearly $30,000. Early indicators have shown that this fund is working beyond expectations, with 100% of the students who received a grant able to complete their semester that was in jeopardy. Additionally, at least 75% of these students have graduated, completed their certification program, successfully transferred onto a four-year university, or are continuing their course of study at Schoolcraft College.
“This fund has proven that a small amount of assistance can make the difference between dropping out of school or completing the semester,” stated Dawn Magretta, Executive Director of the Schoolcraft College Foundation. “It is a wonderful example of how giving of all amounts can truly impact a life!”
