Nancy Anter and Steven L. Berg Recognized by NOSSMi

December 06, 2019

Steven L. Berg present Educator of the Year Award to Nancy Anter

The National Organization for Student Success: Michigan Chapter, now called NOSSMi (formerly MDEC), recently recognized two of Schoolcraft’s instructors. Nancy Anter, known as a creative instructor who makes her classes interesting, fun and engaging, was selected as Developmental Educator of the Year. Steven L. Berg, a full-time faculty member for 19 years, was elected president of the Michigan Chapter.

NOSSMi recognizes that developmental education is more than teaching remedial courses. Instead, the organization works on strategies to help underprepared students prepare as well as ways to help advanced students excel.

Anter has been on the faculty at Schoolcraft for seven years, teaching Colls 052 and Colls 050 to prepare students for college-level reading and critical thinking. She also has been active in NOSSMi her entire teaching career. Anter often volunteers her time to work with students with disabilities to help them organize and write their English papers. Her passion for public service includes working at Pregnancy Aid, Inc. coordinating life skills classes for women in crisis pregnancies and serving as a board member.

Deborah Daiek, Emeritus Dean at Schoolcraft College, said, “Through her outstanding teaching, she is representative of teaching excellence at Schoolcraft College.”

Anter said that she was surprised by the award as she didn’t know she had been nominated. “Everyone wants to be recognized for their work,” Anter said. “That’s not a goal for teachers, though. We love our subject and we love our students. Fueling both is our motivation.”

Berg, a professor who has been a strong advocate of student development that leads to student transformation, will serve a two-year term as President of the Michigan Chapter of NOSSMi. “As we launch our new name, I am honored that my statewide colleagues entrusted me to facilitate a statewide discussion that will lead to a two-year strategic plan to advance student success from across the state,” Berg said.
