When Schoolcraft College suspended face-to-face classes in March because of the coronavirus pandemic, students in lab classes were particularly affected. The College prioritized bringing back these students to campus as soon as possible, with proper health and safety guidelines in place, so they could complete their hands-on training and enter the workforce.

The latest success story is the Business Development Center’s CNC Operator Training Class “boot camp” for manufacturing workers. CNC stands for Computer Numerical Control, and the operator runs a machine to create parts from raw materials, typically metal. There is a strong need for CNC Operators in the Metro Detroit area, so this training fills a void for local employers.

This class started in February, had to pause in March, then resumed in June with graduation on June 18. The eight graduates earned a Certificate of Completion.

This grant-based training has an outstanding placement rate of 86% for program graduates. For these non-traditional students, this program creates a gateway to a lucrative and rewarding career in manufacturing.

“Over the last four years, Schoolcraft College has offered a number of these boot camp trainings,” said Karen Maxton, Occupational Programs Internship and Employment Coordinator. “It has been a privilege to be part of this program and see the life-changing results firsthand. The program is a win for the business community and the students.”
