Schoolcraft Connection’s Adviser Wins National Award

September 08, 2020

Rena Laverty

It’s fitting that Rena Laverty, who fills multiple roles at Schoolcraft College, recently won the Distinguished Multi Media Adviser Award from the College Media Association.

This group, with 600 members nationwide, represents those who advise collegiate media newspapers, yearbooks, magazines and electronic media. Laverty is the only adviser in the two-year college publication category to receive this award.

Her specific title is Student Activities Technician in the Student Activities Office, where the student-run newspaper, The Schoolcraft Connection, is produced. Laverty also recently added College Photographer to her responsibilities.

Todd Stowell, Director of the Student Activities Office, is grateful for all Laverty does.

“Rena personifies the very ideals that make a newspaper advisor great,” he said. “Her grit, organization and determination are apparent to all who work with her.

“She continues to make sure our students have a great foundation of leadership while they work here and gain transferable skills that will serve them well in any endeavor after they leave Schoolcraft.”

Laverty is humbled by the award.

“It is a great honor to be selected for this award and to represent Schoolcraft College at the national level,” she said. “I want to thank the students, staff, faculty and administration for their continued support.”

The recipients will be honored during a virtual awards ceremony during the 2020 ACP/CMA Fall National College Media Convention, which is Oct. 22-24. The Adviser Awards ceremony will be streamed on Friday, Oct. 23, at 7:15 p.m.

Founded in 1954 as the National Council of College Publications Advisers, CMA now has more than 600 members from coast to coast.
