Schoolcraft College, home to the acclaimed Brewing and Distillation Technology program, won a silver medal and a bronze medal in the 2020 U.S. Open Beer Championships. This is the only competition to include beers from professional breweries and beers from gold medal winners from the National AHA Homebrew Competition.
More than 6,000 beers representing over 140 different styles were part of the competition. Schoolcraft’s medal-winners were:
- Silver: Grand Cru (Belgian Golden Strong) in the Belgian-Style Strong Specialty Ale category
- Bronze: Cinful Imperial Porter in the Imperial Porter category
“This is one of the largest beer competitions we enter and one of the most competitive with upward of 40 beers in each style category,” said Thomas Block, Director of Brewing and Distillation Technology. “Because Schoolcraft College beers are judged and compared to some of the best beers in the world, it’s always a great honor when one of our beers earns a medal.”
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, judging was held in both the U.S. and Canada. Judging is blind, with judges knowing only the categories, but not the names or locations, of beers.
Schoolcraft College has won 27 medals in competition since 2017.
