One of Schoolcraft College’s smaller programs recently received top marks as Schoolcraft was ranked No. 1 in Best Cosmetology Associate’s Degree Trade Schools in the Great Lakes Region by TradeCollege.org.

“We’re pleased that our Cosmetology program received this recognition from TradeCollege.org,” said Dr. Dennis K. Genig, Associate Dean of Education and Occupational Programs. “This high ranking reflects the dedication of our instructors and curriculum designers, as well as our outstanding students who graduate to serve their clientele and salons with the utmost skill and professionalism.”
For those who hold a current cosmetology license, Schoolcraft College offers a Cosmetology Management Associate of Applied Science degree that is 67 credit hours. The College will grant Prior Learning Credit equal to 30 semester credit hours, with an active cosmetology license, processing and a fee of $25.
“It is exciting that Schoolcraft College can offer students Prior Learning Credit with their active cosmetology license, saving them the cost and time of earning 30 credit hours, while acknowledging their cosmetology experience and training,” Genig said.

The associate degree in cosmetology management is designed for cosmetologists who are interested in managing a salon or starting their own business. It focuses on the essentials of organizing and operating a business, along with the communication and people skills needed to be successful as a salon manager or owner.

- The average cosmetologist salary in Michigan is $27,201. The salary range typically falls between $22,601 and $33,401.
- The average salon owner salary in Michigan is $48,657. The salary range typically falls between $40,332 and $58,430.
Tamiko Brown is a student in the Cosmetology Management program with extensive professional experience who has found the program valuable.
“I am more than halfway through my Cosmetology Management Degree coursework and must say how much I appreciate the fact that this degree program is even being offered by Schoolcraft College.,” she said. “Taking the business courses have helped me gain the knowledge necessary to take my career in a new direction.
“I would also like to share that last fall I decided to enroll in the Supervision course, which is not a part of the Cosmetology Degree program. The course taught me the importance of effective communication, workplace etiquette and active listening skills. These are critical skills for reaching my future goal of salon ownership.”
Brown said those skills will help her achieve even greater heights as she moves forward in her career.
“Having spent the first fifteen years of my cosmetology career providing services directly to others, I am now looking to start a new chapter in my life and open a studio of salon suites,” Brown said. “I believe the coursework comprising this degree will help me make the transition from being a service provider to salon owner a success.”
