Schoolcraft College Celebrates 56th Commencement

Schoolcraft College held its first on-campus commencement since 2004 on Saturday, May 1, awarding associate degrees, bachelor’s degrees, post-associate degrees and certificates to 1,059 graduates in its 56th Commencement.

Commencement ceremonies were held in the new St. Joe’s Mercy Elite Sports Center with 218 graduates in attendance. An additional 140 graduates signed up to join virtually.

Dr. Glenn Cerny, President of Schoolcraft College, congratulated the graduates and expressed his admiration of their dedication and ability to thrive and achieve despite the many challenges created by the COVID-19 pandemic. 

Livonia Mayor Maureen Miller Brosnan was the keynote speaker and received an Honorary Degree from Joan A. Gebhardt, Chair of the Board of Trustees. Alan C. Helmkamp, Senior Advisor to the Wayne County Commission Vice-Chair and Assistant Commission Counsel, also received an Honorary Degree.

Matthew Fular, Editor in Chief of the Schoolcraft Connection, offered reflections for the Class of 2021. April Appelle was the vocalist.

In addition to Chair Gebhardt, the all members of Board of Trustees were present: Carol M. Strom, Vice Chair; Brian D. Broderick, Secretary; Terry Gilligan, Treasurer; Dillon E. Breen, Trustee; William P. Erwin Jr., Trustee; Brett M. Gierak, Trustee.

The platform also included: Dr. Laurie Kattuah-Snyder, Chief Student Services Officer; Dr. Jerome Lavis, President of the Faculty Forum; Melissa Schultz, Chief Student Enrollment Officer; and Stacy Whiddon, Chief Academic Officer.

Serving as academic marshals were: Dr. Marty Heator, Dean of Students; Dr. Robert Leadley, Dean of Occupational Programs & Economic Development; Dr. Stacey Stover, Dean of New Student Experience; and Dr. Michele Kelly, Dean of Liberal Arts and Sciences.
