Carlos McMath is the new head coach for men’s basketball for Schoolcraft College. A native of Saginaw, Michigan, McMath most recently served as recruiting coordinator and assistant men’s basketball coach at Northwood University, a Division II school in Midland, Michigan.
McMath also was head coach for six seasons at Delta College, which, like Schoolcraft College is a member of the Michigan Community College Athletic Association.
“I always loved the atmosphere and the facility,” said McMath, noting that Delta went 0-6 against the Ocelots when playing at Schoolcraft. “Part of what attracted me is I feel this is a booming area, not just for great student-athletes but also the community is flourishing and growing and I wanted to be part of a situation like that.
“I want to help our student-athletes grow and be successful as well.”
In addition to his coaching career, McMath, who holds a Jurist Doctorate from Michigan State University College of Law, has served in a variety of student diversity and leadership roles.
“Carlos is an experienced coach, but more important, he’s shown throughout his career that students’ academics have been the priority,” said Director of Athletics Cali Crawford. “He’s a great representative for Schoolcraft College and a great person for our young men to look up to.”
Attention to detail – both in the classroom and on the court – will be a focus.
“My coaching philosophy is the same as my life philosophy in terms of ethics,” McMath said. “Every play is crucial and I value the small things. That sometimes is the hardest part – knowing where to start from and understanding what you have to do to be great.”
