Meet Timothy Brown II, a corrections officer and a police sergeant with the Michigan National Guard.
In 2008-10, Brown served in the U.S. Air Force as an electro-mechanical technician. He was deployed in Afghanistan to support “Operation Enduring Freedom.” During his deployment he realized that he had a calling to serve and help. He decided that after the military he would to pursue a career in the field of public safety. He knew that Schoolcraft College, with one of the largest public safety programs in the state of Michigan was the place to reach his goal.
Brown’s experience at Schoolcraft began at the Veteran’s Resource Center. The Veteran’s Resource Center provides a variety of services to assist veterans when they become students. Brown feels that they were a key part of helping him transition back into the world outside of military life.
At the Public Safety Training Center he found that the entire staff, from counselors to instructors, truly cared about the students. The instructors, especially Professors Wicker and Courie, not only taught but shared personal stories from their experiences in the field of public safety. They were also willing to use their professional contacts to help their students succeed.
Brown graduated in 2016, earning his Homeland Security AAS degree and in 2017, earned a Criminal Justice AAS degree.
Taking full advantage of the “3 + 1 program” that Schoolcraft and several partnering universities offer to veterans, he was able to easily transfer to Ferris State where he is currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice.
Today, Brown is employed by the Michigan Department of Corrections. He is proud of his military service and his time at Schoolcraft College. Brown stated that Schoolcraft is “an environment unlike anything else I’ve experienced in the military or law enforcement.” He hopes that his #IamOcelot story will motivate others to pursue their dreams.
